Visit 1:
After communicating with the
potential adopter by e-mail, the owner may decide that a phone conversation is appropriate. If things go
well, the owner would then invite the potential adopter over to meet the dog at home where the dog feels
safe and comfortable. It is not advised to have the potential adopter bring his pet to visit at that time.
Spouse, children, yes - other dogs or cats - NO! Also, it is a good idea to check the potential
adopter's vet or personal reference before the visit takes place.
Visit 2:
If all goes well, the owner should set up the next visit at the adopter's home with all
adoptive family members present. There should be no expectation to leave the dog. It's just a visit! If dogs will be
meeting, it is best to meet on neutral ground with strict supervision and only when appropriate, go into the home. At
that point, the family's pet won't feel that it is an invasion.
Visit 3:
This is when the dog changes families providing everyone is still in agreement regarding
the re-homing. The dog's belongings, vet records, etc. should be included. The adopter should reimburse the owner the
$25.00 Post-A-Pooch-Plus listing fee at that time. Re-homing agreements should be filled out and signed as well.
Ideally, the animal should be spayed or neutered before the dog changes families.
When re-homing a cat, a home visit at the potential adopters home may be all that
is needed to successfully complete the re-homing.
